This summer, as an intern at CRF Bonaire, I experienced what the life of a full-time coral lover is all about. As all certified Coral Restoration Divers will agree with me, it is about the seemingly endless scrubbing of algae, working long cold hours underwater and nasty fire-coral burns. But most of all, I believe it is about working together with passionate and dedicated people towards healthy oceans and the preservation of the most enchanting and beautiful ecosystem of the world. Regardless of how painful that fire coral burn was – I tell you, it was worth it!
Even though I was part of the CRF Bonaire team for just two summer months, I saw the foundation grow tremendously right before my eyes; dozen of new Coral Restoration Divers were certified, numerous corals were outplanted, a brand new coral nursery was constructed, many coral trees were adopted and the internship program has now officially commenced. I feel extremely fortunate that I was able to assist in the development of the CRF and I cannot wait to see how the foundation will continue to grow in the coming years.
Being part of the CRF Bonaire team throughout these last two months was an unforgettable experience and I feel immensely lucky to have been able to work with wonderful people for such an admirable organization. Thank you Francesca and Yago for your tremendous efforts in teaching, guiding and supervising me this summer.
Keep up spreading that coral love while I’m gone- I’ll certainly be back soon with lots of love!
